Room size calculator for designers and homeowners
Calculate room dimensions, floor area, wall area, and volume. Useful for material estimation, furniture planning, and space planning.
Useful for
How it works
Room size calculations help with material ordering, furniture selection, and space planning. Floor area = length × width. Wall area = perimeter × ceiling height. Volume = length × width × ceiling height.
Frequently asked questions
Measure the length and width of the room in meters or feet, then multiply them together to get the floor area. For example, a room 4m × 3.5m = 14 m² floor area. For volume, multiply floor area by ceiling height: 14 m² × 2.7m = 37.8 m³. For wall area, calculate perimeter (2 × length + 2 × width) and multiply by ceiling height.
Room size calculations are essential for ordering materials (paint, flooring, tiles), selecting appropriate furniture, sizing HVAC systems, determining lighting requirements, and meeting building regulations. Knowing floor area, wall area, and volume helps with accurate budgeting and prevents material waste or shortages.
Calculate the room perimeter (2 × length + 2 × width), then multiply by ceiling height. Subtract window and door areas. For example, a 4m × 3m room with 2.7m ceilings has a perimeter of 14m. Wall area = 14m × 2.7m = 37.8 m². Subtract ~3 m² for a window and ~2 m² for a door = 32.8 m² of paintable wall area.
Calculate floor area (length × width) then add 10% for waste and cuts. For a 4m × 3m room: 12 m² + 1.2 m² waste = 13.2 m² of flooring needed. For diagonal or herringbone patterns, add 15% for waste instead of 10%. Always round up to the next full box or pallet when ordering.
Standard residential ceiling heights are 2.4m (8 ft) in most countries, though 2.7m (9 ft) is increasingly common in newer construction. Older buildings may have higher ceilings (3m+). Minimum ceiling heights are regulated by building codes — typically 2.3-2.4m for habitable rooms.
