Square meter calculator — calculate area in m²

Calculate the area of any space in square meters. Enter dimensions for rectangular, triangular, or L-shaped rooms and get instant results.

Formulas

Rectangle: Area = Length × Width

Triangle: Area = (Base × Height) / 2

Circle: Area = π × Radius²

1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft | 1 sq ft = 0.0929 m²

How it works

To calculate square meters, multiply the length by the width of the space. For rectangular rooms: Area = Length × Width. For triangular areas: Area = (Base × Height) / 2. For L-shaped rooms, divide into rectangles and add the areas together.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the length of the space by its width. For example, a room 5m long × 4m wide = 20 square meters (20m²). For non-rectangular spaces, divide into rectangles, calculate each area separately, and add them together. For triangular areas, use (base × height) / 2.

Multiply square feet by 0.0929 to get square meters. For example, 200 sq ft × 0.0929 = 18.58 m². To convert the other way, multiply square meters by 10.7639 to get square feet. For example, 20 m² × 10.7639 = 215.28 sq ft.

A square meter (m²) is a unit of area equal to a square with sides of 1 meter (approximately 10.76 square feet). It is the standard unit for measuring floor area, room sizes, and property areas in most countries worldwide. Real estate, construction, and interior design typically use m² for spatial measurements.

Divide the L-shape into two rectangles. Measure the length and width of each rectangle, calculate their areas separately (length × width for each), then add the two areas together. This method works for any irregular room shape — break it into simple rectangles and sum the results.

Typical room sizes vary by type: a single bedroom is about 9-12 m², a double bedroom 12-16 m², a living room 15-25 m², a kitchen 8-15 m², and a bathroom 4-8 m². A typical 2-bedroom apartment ranges from 55-75 m² total. These figures vary significantly by country and building standards.
